project 3
Mangroves Restoration for Climate Adaptation & Resilience along Cameroon's Coastline
About the project
The Cameroon estuary mangroves, spanning the Wouri estuary in the Littoral Region, comprise 45% of the nation’s mangrove cover. Encompassing 188,000 hectares (460,000 acres), they stretch from Mount Cameroon to Tiko town, embracing Douala and extending to the Sanaga Estuary. A critical global marine biodiversity hotspot, these mangroves shelter water birds, breed fish and shrimp, and carry Ramsar Convention recognition. Yet, human activities such as urbanization, resource exploitation, agro-plantations, and plastic waste pollution threaten their existence. Rampant deforestation, driven by factors like sand mining, petroleum, agro-companies, and local inhabitants, imperil both ecosystems and the livelihoods of coastal communities.
