project 1
Collection & Valorization of Plastic Bottles in Douala
About the project
Plastic waste management is a pressing issue in Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital. The city’s growing population, coupled with increased plastic production from breweries and water bottling companies, has led to a surge in plastic waste pollution. Unfortunately, only a fraction of plastic waste is collected and recycled, causing severe environmental impacts on land, water, air, and human health. To address this challenge, Environment and Food Foundation (E2F) is launching the “Collection and Valorization of Plastic Bottles in Douala” project, which aims to create a comprehensive recycling system with a positive global impact on waste management.

Project Objectives and Goals
Awareness & Environmental Education
Implement educational programs and workshops to raise awareness among coastal community members and students about the impact of marine debris and plastic pollution in the Douala estuary by 2030.
Remove Marine Litter and Plastics
Remove more than 100 tons of marine litter, including PET bottles and ghost gears, from hotspots in the Douala estuary by 2030 through cleanup activities and incentivizing collection efforts from informal waste pickers.
Establish a Modern Plastics Recycling Plant
Establish a modern plastics recycling plant in Douala by 2025, ensuring proper recycling and sustainable storage of recovered plastic waste, and seek international markets for the sale of recycled plastics and ghost gears pellets.
Advocate for Policy Revision
Host national, regional, and international workshops to advocate for the revision of policies on plastics management in Cameroon and contribute to shaping marine policies on a global scale.
Conduct Research and Development
Conduct research on the impacts of marine litter and debris, gather relevant data, and prepare a comprehensive research report to contribute to better understanding and management of marine waste.
Key Activities
Educational Workshops and Environmental Education (EE) curriculum development
Conduct Onshore and Offshore Cleanup Activities
Establish Plastic Bottle Collection Points.
Conduct Policy Advocacy Workshops and International Engagement.
Administer Questionnaires and Conduct Research on Marine Litters/Debris.
Key deliverables
E2F aims to ensure the sustainability of the project by fostering long-term partnerships, engaging local communities in ongoing cleanup and recycling activities, and continuously advocating for policy improvements. Future plans include scaling up recycling operations, expanding educational initiatives, and replicating successful models in other regions to create a broader impact in plastic waste management and environmental conservation.
